His saying, the Exalted: "So he was among the drowned."

10905 - My father told us, Sahl ibn Ghiyath told us, Hafs ibn 'Uthman told us, from al-A'mash, from Mujahid, who said: "When the drowning afflicted the people of Noah, he said: The water rose over the top of every mountain by fifteen [units of height]." He said: "The drowning afflicted a woman among those who were afflicted, and she had a young child, so she placed him upon her chest. When the water reached her, she placed him on her shoulders. When the water reached her, she placed him on her hands." He said: "So the Blessed and Exalted said: Had I shown mercy to anyone among the inhabitants of the earth, I would have shown mercy to her."

10906 - My father told us, Nasr ibn 'Ali told us, Nuh ibn Qays told us, from 'Awn ibn Abi Sharrad, who said: "The water drowned the mountains, [rising] above them by eighty miles."

His saying, the Exalted: "And it was said, 'O earth, swallow your water.'"

10907 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn 'Abbad al-Muzani told us, 'Abd Allah ibn Sinan told us, from Nuh ibn al-Mukhtar, from Abu Sa'id, regarding (wa ghida): He said: "I went out intending to drink water, and I passed by the Euphrates, and behold, al-Hasan and al-Husayn were there. They said: 'O Abu Sa'id, where are you heading?' I said: 'I am going to drink bitter water.' He said: 'Do not drink bitter water, for when it was the time of the Flood, Allah commanded the earth to swallow its water and commanded the sky to cease. It defied [the command] in some places, so He cursed it, and its water became bitter and its soil became saline, growing nothing.'"

10908 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani reported to us in what he wrote to me, Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Karim told us, 'Abd al-Samad ibn Ma'qil told me, he said: I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih, regarding: "And it was said, 'O earth, swallow your water,'" he says: "In Abyssinian: 'Azrudihi' (swallow it)."

10909 - My father told us, Hisham ibn Khalid told us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq told us, Ibn Abi 'Arubah told us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "O earth, swallow your water," he says: "Swallow what was upon you."

10910 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And O sky, cease," he says: "Be still." And it was narrated from Qatadah similarly.

His saying, the Exalted: "And the water subsided."

10911 - And through this chain, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And the water subsided," he says: "The water departed." And it was narrated from Qatadah similarly.
