His saying, the Exalted: "until it becomes clear to you."
10078 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "May Allah pardon you, why did you give them permission until it becomes clear to you who are truthful"—a group of people sought his permission on that day, and he granted them permission. So Allah said: "Why did you give them permission until it becomes clear to you who are truthful?"—[meaning] the recognition of those who were truthful by going forth.
His saying, the Exalted: "And you know the liars."
10079 - And by the same chain from al-Suddi regarding his saying: "And you know the liars"—he said: The recognition of those who lied by staying behind.
His saying, the Exalted: "Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your permission [to be excused] from striving with their wealth and their lives. And Allah is Knowing of the righteous."
10080 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih (the scribe of al-Layth) narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your permission"—this is a reproach to the hypocrites, as they asked permission to stay behind from the Jihad without an excuse, while Allah excused the believers and said: They do not depart until they ask his permission.
10081 - al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us, by way of reading, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father 'Ata' who said: "Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask your permission" [concerning] the two verses up to His saying: "they waver." They were abrogated in Surat al-Nur: "The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger..." until "indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) established by the higher of the two opinions that whoever went out to battle was in a state of virtue, and whoever stayed behind, stayed behind without blame.
His saying, the Exalted: "And Allah is Knowing of the righteous."
10082 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us—he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: "Knowing"—that is, knowing what they conceal.
His saying, the Exalted: "and their hearts have doubted, so they, in their doubt, are wavering."
10083 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Hariz—meaning Ibn 'Uthman—narrated to us, from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Awf, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mas'ud al-Fazari, from Abu al-Darda' who said: Doubt is disbelief and Kufr (denial).
