So do the work of a man who knows that nothing will save him except his own deeds, and rely as a man relies who knows that nothing will befall him except what Allah has decreed for him.
10316 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, who said: Ibn Ishaq said: "And upon Allah—not upon the people—let the believers rely."
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Do you await for us except one of the two best things?'"
10317 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Say, 'Do you await for us except one of the two best things?'" meaning: Fighting; for it is martyrdom or life and provision. He said: "And one of the two best things: victory or martyrdom."
10318 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "One of the two best things," [it is] being killed in the cause of Allah, and victory over the enemies of Allah.
His saying, the Exalted: "And we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands," the verse.
10319 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands. So wait; indeed we, along with you, are waiters," [meaning:] that Allah will disgrace you at our hands.
10320 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid reported to us, Yazid narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or at our hands," meaning: killing.
His saying, the Exalted: "Say, 'Spend, willingly or unwillingly.'"
10321 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali reported to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Say, 'Spend, willingly or unwillingly, it will never be accepted from you.'" As for "willingly," it is from their own selves, and as for "unwillingly," it is from the fear of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—.
10322 - Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Aslam mentioned it to us, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Rahawayh narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid reported to us, Juwaybir narrated to us, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "Say, 'Spend, willingly or unwillingly, it will never be accepted from you.'"
