10385 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih—the scribe of al-Layth—narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to us, ‘Aqil narrated to us, Ibn Shihab narrated to us, that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz instructed him, so he wrote down the Sunnah regarding the places of Zakat (alms). He wrote: "The share for those in bondage is divided into two halves; one half is for every mukatab (slave under a manumission contract) who professes Islam. They are of various categories in Islam, in terms of merit, and for those other than them, there is another status, based on what each man among them has paid and what remains upon him, if Allah wills."

His saying, the Almighty: "and those in debt."

10386 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi‘ narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Razzaq informed us, al-Thawri informed us, from ‘Uthman ibn al-Aswad, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "and those in debt": He said: He whose house has burned down, or whose wealth has been swept away by a flood, or who has incurred debt for his family's sustenance.

10387 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki‘ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far, regarding "and those in debt": He said: Those who incur debt without indulgence in corruption.

10388 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma‘ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan: As for "those in debt," it is he who asks for help due to a blood-money payment or a calamity that befalls him. It was also narrated from Muhammad ibn Shu‘ayb ibn Shabur, from Muqatil, that he said: They are those upon whom there is debt.

10389 - My father narrated to us, Mahmud ibn Khalid al-Dimashqi narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Ibn Jabir narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn Mukhaymirah, that he came to ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz and asked him to pay off his debt. He asked: "How much is your debt?" He replied: "Ninety dinars." He said: "We have paid it on your behalf; you are among those in debt."

10390 - Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Maymun al-Iskandarani narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, al-Awza‘i [narrated] that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz allocated sixty for al-Qasim ibn Mukhaymirah and paid off ninety dinars on his behalf, and said to him: "You are among those in debt," and ordered for him a servant and a dwelling.

His saying, the Almighty: "and for the cause of Allah."

10391 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih—the scribe of al-Layth—narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to us, ‘Aqil narrated to us, Ibn Shihab narrated to us, that ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz instructed him, so he wrote down the Sunnah regarding the places of Zakat. He wrote: "Shares for the cause of Allah: from it, for the one to whom it has been assigned, is a quarter of this share; from it, for the poor volunteer, is a quarter of it; and from it, for whoever is afflicted by need at a frontier while he is a warrior fighting in the cause of Allah, is a third of this share, if Allah wills."
