Michael. Gabriel said to Michael, peace be upon them: 'Bring me a basin of Zamzam water so that I may purify his heart and open his chest.' He split open his abdomen and washed it three times, and Michael, peace be upon him, brought him three basins of Zamzam water, so he opened his chest and removed what was in it of malice, and filled it with forbearance, knowledge, faith, certainty, and submission. He sealed the space between his shoulders with the seal of prophethood. Then he brought him a horse and he mounted it; every stride it took was as far as its sight could reach. He traveled, and Gabriel traveled with him. He passed by a people who were sowing on one day and reaping on the same day; whenever they reaped, it returned as it was. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: 'O Gabriel, what is this?' He said: 'These are the strivers in the cause of Allah; their good deeds are multiplied seven hundred-fold, and whatever they spend on anything, He replaces it.' Then he passed by a people who had patches on their fronts and patches on their backs, grazing like camels and livestock, eating the dry, thorny shrub (ad-dari'), the bitter tree (az-zaqqum), and the burning rocks and stones of Hell. He said: 'Who are these, O Gabriel?' He said: 'These are those who do not pay the alms (sadaqat) on their wealth, and Allah has not wronged them at all.' Then he passed by a people who had well-cooked meat in a pot before them, and other raw, foul meat, and they began to eat from the raw, foul meat and leave the cooked, good meat. I said: 'Who are these, O Gabriel?' He said: 'This is the man from your nation who has a lawful wife, yet he comes to a foul woman and spends the night with her until morning, and the woman, who rises from her husband while lawful and good, comes to a foul man and spends the night with him until morning.' Then he passed by a piece of wood on the road; no garment passed by it but it tore it, and nothing passed by it but it ripped it. He said: 'What is this, O Gabriel?' He said: 'This is the likeness of groups from your nation who sit on the road and obstruct it.' Then he passed by a man who had gathered a huge bundle he could not carry, yet he kept adding to it. He said: 'What is this, O Gabriel?' He said: 'This is a man from your nation upon whom people's trusts rest, which he cannot fulfill, yet he wants to take on more.' Then he passed by a people whose tongues and lips were being cut with scissors of fire; every time they were cut, they returned as they were, without that ceasing for them at all. He said: 'Who are these, O Gabriel?' He said: 'These are the orators of discord.' Then he passed by a small rock from which a huge bull emerged, and the bull began trying to return to where it came from but could not. He said: 'What is this, O Gabriel?' He said: 'This is the man who speaks a great word, then regrets it and cannot take it back.' Then he passed by a valley and found a cool, pleasant breeze and the scent of musk, and he heard a voice. He said: 'O Gabriel, what is this?' He said: 'This is the sound of Paradise. It says: "O Lord, give me what You have promised me; for my chambers, my brocade, my silk, my soft silk, my silk embroidery, my pearls, my coral, my silver, my gold, my cups, my platters, my pitchers, my vessels, my honey, my water, my milk, and my wine have multiplied. So give me what You have promised me." He said: "You have every Muslim man and woman, and every believing man and woman." It said: "I am satisfied."
