except that which we knew." He said: The ruling among the prophets—Ya‘qub and his sons—was that the thief is to be seized for his theft at the time he commits the theft.
His saying, the Almighty: "And we were not witnesses to the unseen."
11863 - My father narrated to us, Mu‘adh ibn Asad al-Marwazi narrated to us, al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, from al-Husayn ibn Waqid, from Yazid, from ‘Ikrimah, regarding His saying: "And we were not witnesses to the unseen," meaning: We did not know that your son would steal.
11864 - ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir informed us, Qatadah narrated to us: "And we were not witnesses to the unseen," i.e., we did not perceive that your son would steal.
11865 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq: "And we were not witnesses to the unseen," meaning we have no knowledge of the unseen.
11866 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd say regarding His saying: "And we were not witnesses to the unseen," he said: We did not know from the unseen that he had taken something for himself, nor did we suspect that. We merely asked, "What is the penalty for the thief?"
His saying, the Almighty: "And ask the city in which we were."
11867 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir informed us, Qatadah narrated to us, regarding His saying: "And ask the city in which we were," which is: Egypt.
His saying, the Almighty: "And the caravan in which we came."
11868 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi ‘Umar al-‘Adani narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid(1), regarding His saying: "And the caravan [al-‘ir]"—he said: It is [a group of] Himyar.
11869 - ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, he said: Rubil knew, in his statement to his brothers, that they were viewed with suspicion by their father because of what they had done to Yusuf. And his saying: "And ask the city in which we were," [means] they knew what we knew, and they witnessed what we witnessed, if you do not believe us, for we are indeed truthful.

إِلَّا وَذَلِكَ الَّذِي عَلِمْنَا، قَالَ وَكَانَ الْحَكَمُ عِنْدَ الأَنْبِيَاءِ: يَعْقُوبَ وَبَنِيهِ: أَنْ يُؤْخَذَ السَّارِقُ بسرقته عند ما يَسْرِقُ.

١١٨٦٤ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ، أنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ ثنا قَتَادَةُ ما كُنَّا لِلْغَيبِ حَافِظِينَ أَيْ مَا كُنَّا نَشْعُرُ أَنَّ ابْنَكَ يَسْرِقُ.
١١٨٦٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا سَلَمَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ:
وَمَا كُنَّا لِلْغَيبِ حَافِظِينَ فَلا عَلِمَ لَنَا بِالْغَيْبِ.
١١٨٦٦ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، أَنَا أَصْبَغُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ: عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ زَيْدٍ يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَمَا كُنَّا لِلْغَيبِ حَافِظِينَ قَالَ:
مَا عَلِمْنَا مِنَ الْغَيْبِ إِنَّهُ أَخَذَ لَهُ شَيْئًا، وَلا ظَنَنَّا ذَلِكَ، إِنَّمَا سَأَلْنَا مَا جزاء السارق؟
قوله تعالى: وسئل الْقَرْيَةَ الَّتِي كُنَّا فِيهَا.
١١٨٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، ثنا قَتَادَةُ قوله: وسئل الْقَرْيَةَ الَّتِي كُنَّا فِيهَا وَهِيَ: مِصْرُ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَالْعِيرَ الَّتِي أَقْبَلْنَا فِيهَا.
١١٨٦٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «١»
فِي قَوْلِهِ: والعير قَالَ: هِيَ حِمْيَرٌ.
١١٨٦٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ثنا سَلَمَةُ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: وَقَدْ عَرَفَ رُوبِيلُ فِي رَجَعَ قَوْلُهُ لإِخْوَتِهِ، أَنَّهُمْ أَهْلُ تُهْمَةٍ عِنْدَ أَبِيهِمْ، لَمَّا كَانُوا صَنَعُوا فِي يُوسُفَ، وَقَوْلُهُ: وسئل الْقَرْيَةَ الَّتِي كُنَّا فِيهَا فَقَدْ عَلِمُوا مَا عَلِمْنَا، وَشَهِدُوا مَا شَهِدْنَا، إِنْ كُنْتَ لا تصدقنا، وإنا لصادقون.
