His saying, the Almighty: "And his eyes became white with grief."

- My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Zayd, from al-Hasan, from al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Dawud (peace be upon him) said: 'O Lord, the Children of Israel ask of You by Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya‘qub, so make me a fourth for them.' Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: 'O Dawud, Ibrahim was cast into the fire for a cause, and he remained patient, and that was a trial that did not befall you. Ishaq offered his life's blood for a cause, and he remained patient, and that was a trial that did not befall you. And Ya‘qub had his beloved taken from him until his eyes became white with grief, and he remained patient, and that was a trial that did not befall you [1].'"

- My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl al-Harrani narrated to us, Naddar ibn ‘Arabiy narrated to us, he said: It reached me that when the grief of Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) over Yusuf was prolonged, his eyes went blind from grief, and he was kazim (suppressing his sorrow). Visitors would enter upon him and say: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah, how do you find yourself?" He would say: "An old man who has lost his sight." Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then revealed to him: "O Ya‘qub, have you complained about Me to your visitors?" He said: "O my Lord, this is a sin I committed; I shall not return to it." After that, he would always say: "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know."

- Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la informed us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Yazid ibn Yunus ibn Yazid informed me, from al-Hasan ibn al-Hurr, from Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, that Jibril entered upon Yusuf in prison, and he recognized him. He said to him: "O King who is noble to his Lord, do you have knowledge of Ya‘qub?" He said: "Yes." He asked: "What has become of him?" He replied: "His eyes have become white with grief for you." He asked: "What has his grief reached?" He said: "He has grieved for seventy [years]." He asked: "Is there a reward for him in that?" He said: "Yes, the reward of one hundred martyrs."

- Isma‘il ibn Abi al-Harith narrated to us, Khalaf ibn Tamim narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Taymi narrated to us, he said: I heard al-Suddi say something similar.

- My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Isma‘il ibn ‘Ayyash narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, from Mujahid, with the like of it, except that he said: "His sight was lost," and he said: "He has the reward of seventy martyrs."
