14374 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [who said]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [who said]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision," [he said]: Meaning: to guard some of their vision. The word "from" (min) here is a connective in the speech, meaning: Tell the believing men to guard their vision from what is not lawful for them to look at.
14375 - Kathir ibn Shihab narrated to us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Sa'id Sabiq narrated to us, [who said]: 'Amr ibn Abi Qays narrated to us, [who said]: 'Asim al-Ahwal narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, who said: I said to him: What do you say regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted and Majestic: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision"? What about a man who looks at a woman and does not see anything unlawful of her? He said: "By Allah, you do not have the right to pierce her with your eyes."
14376 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: 'Amr ibn Rafi' narrated to us, [who said]: Sulayman ibn 'Amir informed us, from al-Rabi', regarding His saying: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision," [he said]: He should not look at anyone's private parts ('awrah).
14377 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, [who said]: Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [who said]: Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, [who said]: Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision," [he said]: It means: they should guard some of their vision.
14378 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, [who said]: Asbagh informed us, [who said]: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd, regarding the saying of Allah: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision," [he said]: He reduces his vision from looking at what is not lawful for him. He meant that when he sees what is not lawful for him, he should reduce his vision and not look at it. He said: "No one is able to reduce his vision completely; rather, Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: 'Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision.'"
His saying, the Exalted: "and guard their private parts."
[The First View]
14379 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, [who said]: My father narrated to us, [who said]: Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah, who said: Everything in the Qur'an [mentioning] "guarding their private parts" and "guarding their private parts [feminine]" refers to adultery, except for what is in this verse in Surat al-Nur. It means a man should not look at the private parts of a man, and a woman should not look at the private parts of a woman.
And the Second View:
14380 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya narrated to us, [who said]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [who said]: 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "and guard their private parts," [he said]: Meaning: from immoral acts (fawahish).
١٤٣٧٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا يحى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ يَعْنِى يَحْفَظُوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ، فَمِنْ هُنَا صِلَةٌ فِي الْكَلامِ، يَعْنِى: قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَحْفَظُوا أَبْصَارَهُمْ عَمَّا لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُمُ النَّظَرُ إِلَيْهِ.
١٤٣٧٥ - حَدَّثَنَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ شِهَابٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ سَابِقٍ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي قَيْسٍ، ثنا عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَرَأَيْتَ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ:
قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمِ أَرَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْمَرْأَةِ لَا يَرَى مِنْهَا مُحَرَّمًا قَالَ: وَاللَّهِ مَا لَكَ أَنْ تَنْقِبَهَا بِعَيْنَيْكَ.
١٤٣٧٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ رَافِعٍ، أَنْبَأَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ قَالَ: لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ أَحَدٍ.
١٤٣٧٧ - قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُزَاحِمٍ، ثنا بُكَيْرُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، عَنْ مقاتل ابن حَيَّانَ قَوْلُهُ: قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ يَقُولُ: يَحْفَظُوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ.
١٤٣٧٨ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ أَصْبَغُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ قَالَ: يَغُضُّ مِنْ بَصَرِهِ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ، أَرَادَ أَنَّهُ إِذَا رَأَى مَا لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ غَضَّ مِنْ بَصَرِهِ لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، قَالَ:
وَلا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَحَدٌ أَنْ يَغُضَّ بَصَرَهُ كُلَّهُ إِنَّمَا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ.
قوله تعالى: وَيَحْفَظُوا فروجهم.

١٤٣٧٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ، ثنا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ قَالَ: كُلُّ شَيْءٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ يَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ، وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ، يَقُولُ: مِنَ الزِّنَا إِلا مَا كَانَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ فِي النُّورِ. يَقُولُ لَا يَنْظُرُ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الرَّجُلِ وَلا الْمَرْأَةُ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الْمَرْأَةِ.

١٤٣٨٠ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا يحي، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءٌ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ يعني عن الفواحش.
