The Statement of the Exalted: "Those to whom you are devoted."

13669 - From Qatadah, regarding His statement: "Those to whom you are devoted," he said: "Worshippers." And regarding His statement: "They said: 'We found our fathers worshippers of them,'" meaning following a religion, and that we are followers of them in that.

13670 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Sabah narrated to us, Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir narrated to us, Sa'd ibn Tarif narrated to us from Ibn al-Asbagh ibn Nubatah, who said: Ali passed by some people playing chess and said: "What are these statues to which you are devoted? For your companion to touch a burning coal until it is extinguished is better for him than to touch them."

The Statement of the Exalted: "They said: 'We heard a young man mention them, who is called Abraham.'"

13671 - Muhammad ibn 'Awf narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, Jarir ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us from Qabus, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "Allah did not send a prophet except that he was a young man, and no scholar was given knowledge except that he was a young man," and he recited this verse: "They said: 'We heard a young man mention them, who is called Abraham.'"

The Statement of the Exalted: "And by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols."

13672 - From Qatadah, regarding His statement: "And by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols," he said: "It is considered that he said this when they could not hear, then he made them into fragments," he said: "Broken pieces, except for a large one of theirs," he says: "Except for the largest of their gods, the most precious and greatest of them in their own estimation. 'That they might return to it,'" he said: "He planned against them with that so that they might remember or see the truth." And regarding His statement: "They said: 'Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify,'" he said: "They disliked taking him without evidence." And regarding His statement: "'Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?'... until His statement: 'You are the wrongdoers,'" he said: "And this is the trick by which he planned against them. Then they were turned back upon their heads," he said: "The people were overcome by evil jealousy and said: 'You have already known that these do not speak.'"

The Statement of the Exalted: "Fragments (judhadhan)."

13673 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His statement: "Fragments," he said: "Broken ruins."

13674 - From Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His statement: "Fragments," he said: "Crumbles."
