from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir regarding this verse: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution if they desire chastity," he said: It was revealed concerning a slave girl of 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul named Musaykah. He used to force her into immorality, and she was of no fault [in that] and would refuse, so Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: "And whoever forces them, then indeed, Allah, after their being forced, is Forgiving and Merciful to them."
- Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Dawud reported from Sulayman ibn Mu'adh, from Simak, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: That a slave girl of 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy used to commit adultery in the Jahiliyyah, and she bore children from adultery. He said to her: "What is the matter with you? Will you not commit adultery?" She said: "No, by Allah, I will not commit adultery." So he beat her, and Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution."
- My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Salih reported, [saying]: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution," he says: Do not force your slave girls to adultery.
- Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to me, [saying]: Hafs ibn 'Umar informed us, [saying]: al-Hakam ibn Aban reported from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution," the verse, he said: There was a slave girl of 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul named Mu'adhah who used to pay a tribute. Then Allah revealed the prohibition of that. She said to her people: "If it was good, it has passed, and if it was evil, the Prophet has arrived, so I will seek forgiveness from Allah and I will not do it again, if Allah wills." Then her people imposed the tribute on her again, so Allah revealed this verse.
- Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah reported, [saying]: Warqa' reported from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "your slave girls to prostitution," meaning: your female slaves to adultery. That is because 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul ordered a slave girl of his to commit adultery, so she committed adultery and brought him a burdah (garment) and gave it to him. He said: "Go back and commit adultery with another." She said: "By Allah, I will not return."
- Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani informed us, in what he wrote to me, [saying]: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, [saying]: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri: That a man from Quraysh was taken prisoner on the day of Badr. He was with 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy as a captive. 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy had a slave girl named Mu'adhah, and the captive Qurashi wanted her for himself. She was a Muslim and would resist him due to her Islam, while 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy would force her to do that and beat her
