- Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' reported to us, Sa'id reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "or your friend," that if you were to enter upon a friend and then eat from his food without his permission, it would be lawful for you.
- I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Husayn reported to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim reported to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf reported to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "There is no blame upon the blind, nor any blame upon the lame..." It reached us—and Allah knows best—that there was a clan of the Ansar where some would not eat at the house of others, nor with the sick, due to his saying, nor with the visually impaired, nor with the lame. A man named al-Harith ibn 'Amr set out on a military expedition and left Malik ibn Zayd in charge of his family and his storehouses. When al-Harith returned from his expedition, he saw Malik in a strained state, having been afflicted by hardship. He said, "What has afflicted you?" Malik said, "I did not have abundance." Al-Harith said, "Did I not leave you with my family and my wealth?" He said, "Yes, but your wealth was not lawful for me, and I would not eat wealth that is not lawful for me." So Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: "There is no blame upon the blind," the verse, up to His saying: "or your friend," meaning al-Harith ibn 'Amr when he left Malik in charge of his family, his wealth, and his belongings. Thus, the dispensation came from Allah and permission for them all.
His saying, the Almighty: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately."
- My father narrated to us, Abu Salih reported to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately." This was because when Allah revealed: "O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly," the Muslims said: "Allah has forbidden us to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly, and food is the best of wealth, so it is not lawful for any of us to eat at another's house." People ceased doing that, so Allah revealed thereafter: "There is no blame upon the blind, nor is there any blame upon the lame..." up to His saying: "or what you possess the keys of," which refers to a man who entrusts a man with his estate, and whom Allah has granted a concession to eat from that food and dates, and to drink water. They also used to feel ashamed and constrained if a man ate food alone, without someone else with him, so Allah granted them a concession and said: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately."
- Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah reported to us, Ibn Lahi'ah reported to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately." That is because when they traveled, they would put their food in one place, and if one of them was absent...
