Mutarrif ibn Mazin narrated to us, 'Isa ibn 'Ubayd ibn Zurarah reported to us, who said: I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih say: The distance between the jaws of the serpent that was [the manifestation of] the staff of Moses was twelve cubits.
15592 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Sahl ibn Bakkar reported to us, Abu 'Awanah reported to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "So he cast down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban)," he said: He cast down his staff, and it became a serpent, the distance between whose jaws was from the twilight to the earth.
15593 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, regarding: "And behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban)," and the thu'ban is the male of the snakes. It opened its mouth, placing its lower jaw on the earth and the upper one on the walls of the palace. Then it turned toward Pharaoh to seize him. When he saw it, he was terrified of it and lunged, and he suffered from incontinence (fainting/loss of bowels), which he had not experienced before. He cried out, "O Moses, take it, and I will believe in you and I will send the Children of Israel with you." So Moses took it, and it became a staff again.
15594 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa reported to us, Salamah reported to us, from Ibn Ishaq, regarding: "So he cast down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban)," it remained between the two rows of Pharaoh's entourage, its mouth open, and its staff-head (mihjan) served as a crest on its back. The people fled from it, and Pharaoh lunged from his throne. It began to blaze and rise over the side of Pharaoh's palace, then it would return to Moses, fawning around him and circling him.
15595 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Muqaddami reported to us, Balm ibn Ghazwan reported to us, Farqad al-Sabakhi reported to us, who said: Whenever Pharaoh had a need, the magicians would take him a distance of fifty farsakhs, and when he fulfilled his need, they would bring him back. Then came the day of the staff of Moses, for it opened its mouth and the distance between its jaws was forty cubits.
His saying, the Exalted: "And he drew out his hand"
15596 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid al-Wasiti narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun reported to us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr narrated to me, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And he drew out his hand," he said: He brought his hand out of his garment (jayb). It was [also] narrated from al-Suddi the same. Regarding His saying: "And behold, it was white to the beholders," he said: He brought his hand out of his garment and saw it white without any affliction, meaning leprosy. Then he returned it into his sleeve, and it returned to its original color.
