Dinar, from Yahya ibn Ja'dah, from Rifa'ah al-Qurazi, who said: It was revealed: "And We have connected the discourse for them" concerning ten [people], and I am one of them.

16974 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "And We have connected the discourse for them"—[it refers to] Quraysh.

His saying, Exalted is He: "The discourse for them"

16975 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And We have connected the discourse for them"—he said: Allah has connected the discourse for them in this Qur'an, what informs them of how He dealt with those who passed before, and how He will deal [with those to come], so that they may take heed.

His saying, Exalted is He: "So that they may take heed"

Its interpretation has preceded.

16976 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me: My father narrated to me, my paternal uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So that they may take heed"—meaning Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

His saying, Exalted is He: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it—they are believers in it [the Qur'an]"

16977 - al-Husayn ibn al-Sakan al-Basri narrated to us, Abu Zayd al-Nahwi narrated to us, Qays informed us, from Salim al-Aftas, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant"—he said: They are the Negus, who sent word of his Islam and the Islam of his people; they were seventy men he chose from his people—the best of the best in jurisprudence and traditions. When they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and entered upon him, he recited to them: "Ya Sin. By the Qur'an, full of wisdom" until he reached its end. They wept when they heard the Qur'an and knew that it was the truth. Then was revealed concerning them: "That is because among them are priests and monks" up to His saying: "shedding tears." And there was also revealed concerning them: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it—they are believers in it" up to His saying: "Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured" until the end of the verses.

16978 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn 'Atiyyah informed us in what he wrote to me: My father narrated to us, my paternal uncle narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it—they are believers in it"—he said: Meaning those among the People of the Scripture who believed in Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
