His saying, Exalted is He: "And never would We have destroyed the cities except while their people were wrongdoers."

17023 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d ibn ‘Atiyyah informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And never would We have destroyed the cities except while their people were wrongdoers," he said: Allah does not destroy a city while it is in a state of faith, but He destroys cities due to injustice when their people are unjust. If Mecca had believed, they would not have perished along with those who perished; rather, they denied and committed injustice, and by that, they were destroyed.

17024 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid al-Qattan al-Raqqi narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah, meaning the son of Hisham, narrated to us, he said: I heard Sufyan saying: "The world (al-dunya) was only named as such because it is lowly (danat)."

17026 - It was mentioned from Ibrahim ibn Yusuf al-Balkhi, al-Nadr ibn Shumayl Qatan Abu al-Haytham narrated to us, from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Abd al-Ghafir, from Ka‘b, he said: It is written in the Torah: "O son of Adam, place your treasure with Me; it will neither be drowned nor burned. I will return it to you when you are in the greatest need of it, on the Day of Resurrection."

17027 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed me in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying: "Do not forget to send forth from your world for your Hereafter, for you will only find in your Hereafter what you sent forth from the world out of what Allah has provided you."

17028 - And by it, from Ibn Zayd regarding His saying: "Then will you not use reason?" He said: "Then will you not reflect?"

His saying, Exalted is He: "Is he whom We have promised a good promise which he will meet?"

17030 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas informed us, Yazid narrated to us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Is he whom We have promised a good promise which he will meet?" He said: This is the believer who heard the Book of Allah, believed in it, and trusted in what Allah promised within it.
