17141 - Mentioned from al-Husayn ibn al-Husayn al-'Arabi, Shababah reported to us, Yahya ibn Ya'la al-Aslami reported to us, from Asbat ibn Nasr, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Alif-Lam-Mim. Do the people think that they will be left [merely] because they say 'We believe' and they will not be tested? And We certainly tested those before them, so Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars." He said: Those who are truthful are 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and his companions.

17148 - 'Ubayd ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hamzah narrated to us in what he wrote to me, Abu al-Jumahir reported to us, Sa'id ibn Bashir reported to us, Qatadah reported to us: "And We certainly tested those before them," meaning: We tested those who were before them. "So Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars," [meaning] Allah will know the truthful from the liar, and the obedient from the disobedient.

It used to be said: Indeed, the believer is struck by trials just as gold is tested by fire. It also used to be said: The parable of trial (fitnah) is like the parable of counterfeit dirhams; the blind person takes it, while the person with sight sees it.

His saying, the Exalted: "Or do they who do evil deeds think..."

17149 - Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi reported to me in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn al-Marwazi reported to us, Shayban ibn 'Abd al-Rahman reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Or do they who do evil deeds think," he said: The Jews.

His saying, the Exalted: "...evil deeds"

17150 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid reported, Yazid ibn Zurayʿ reported to us, he said: I heard Saʿid, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Or do they who do evil deeds think," meaning: shirk (polytheism), "that they can outrun Us? Evil is what they judge."

His saying, the Exalted: "...that they can outrun Us? Evil is what they judge."

17151 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "that they can outrun Us? Evil is what they judge," meaning: that they can incapacitate Us.

His saying, the Exalted: "Whoever hopes for the meeting with Allah"
