The fourth aspect
17357 - Ahmad ibn 'Isam al-Ansari narrated to us, Mu'ammal narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he said: "Do not fight except those who fight you and do not pay the jizyah."
His saying, the Almighty: "Except in a way that is best"
17358 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he says: "Whoever among them pays the jizyah, do not speak to them except well."
17359 - My father narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn al-'Awwam narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn Husayn regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he said: "The 'way that is best' is to say: 'We believe in what has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our God and your God is one' up to the end of the verse. This is arguing with them in the way that is best."
17360 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he said: "If they speak evil, then speak good."
His saying, the Almighty: "Except those who do wrong among them"
17361 - Ahmad ibn 'Asim al-Istihbani narrated to us, Abu 'Asim narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Khusayf, from Mujahid regarding: "Do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except those who do wrong among them," he said: "Those who do wrong are those who fight you and do not give you the jizyah."
17362 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Salim, from Mujahid regarding: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except those who do wrong among them," he said: "Those who do wrong among them are those at war with whom there is no treaty, so you argue with them with the sword."
17363 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Except those who do wrong, so seek redress from them." And Mujahid said in another place of this surah: "Except those who do wrong among them"—they said: "There is a god with Allah, and a son, and a partner, and that the hand of Allah is chained, and that Allah is poor." Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "They are the People of the Scripture."

١٧٣٥٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِصَامٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، ثنا مُؤَمَّلٌ، ثنا سفيان، عن ابن نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَوْلُهُ: وَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ قَالَ: لَا تُقَاتِلُوا إِلا مَنْ قَاتَلَكُمْ وَلَمْ يُعْطِي الْجِزْيَةَ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ
١٧٣٥٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا مِنْجَابُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي رَوْقٍ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَدَّى مِنْهُمُ الْجِزْيَةَ فَلا تَقُولُوا لَهُمْ إِلا حَسَنًا.
١٧٣٥٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ قَالَ: الَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ قُولُوا آمَنَّا بِالَّذِي أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَأُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ وَإِلَهُنَا وَإِلَهُكُمْ وَاحِدٌ إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ هَذِهِ مُجَادَلَتُهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ.
١٧٣٦٠ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حمزة، ثنا شبانة، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَوْلُهُ: وَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنْ قَالُوا شَرًّا فَقُولُوا خَيْرًا.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِلا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْهُمْ
١٧٣٦١ - حدثنا أحمد بن عاصم الاستهباني، ثنا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ خُصَيْفٍ، عن مجاهد لا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِلا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْهُمْ قَالَ: الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا: مَنْ قَاتَلَكَ وَلَمْ يُعْطِكَ الْجِزْيَةَ.
١٧٣٦٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثنا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَلا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِلا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْهُمْ قَالَ: الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْهُمْ أَهْلُ الْحَرْبِ مَنْ لَا عَهْدَ لَهُ فتجادلوهم بالسيف.
