"Where to?" He replied: "Ah, the scent of Paradise, I find it before Uhud." He fought until he was killed, and there were found on his body over eighty wounds from a sword strike, a spear stab, and an arrow shot. This verse was revealed: "Men who are true to what they promised Allah," and they used to consider that it was revealed regarding him and his companions (1).
- From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that his uncle was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said: "I was absent from the first battle the Prophet (peace be upon him) fought against the polytheists. If Allah, the Exalted, allows me to witness a battle against the polytheists, Allah will certainly see how I act." When the day of Uhud arrived and the polytheists retreated, he said: "O Allah, I am innocent before You of what these people (meaning the polytheists) have brought, and I offer my apology to You for what these people (meaning his companions) have done." Then he advanced, and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said: "O my brother, what have you done? I am with you." But I was not able to do what he did. There were found on him over eighty wounds from a sword strike, a spear stab, and a shot (2).
- From Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned from Uhud, he ascended the pulpit, praised Allah, and extolled Him, then recited this verse: "Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah," in its entirety. A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, who are they?" I came forward, and he said: "O inquirer, this one is among them" (3).
- From Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: Talhah is among those who have fulfilled their vow" (4).
- Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Humayd narrated to us from Anas that his uncle—meaning Anas ibn al-Nadr—was absent from the Battle of Badr. He said: "I was kept away from the first battle the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fought against the polytheists. If Allah allows me to witness a battle against the polytheists, Allah will certainly see what I will do." He said: When the day of Uhud arrived and the Muslims retreated, he said: "O Allah, I apologize to You for what these people (meaning his companions) have done, and I am innocent before You of what these people (meaning the polytheists) have brought." Then he advanced, and Sa'd—meaning Ibn Mu'adh—met him before Uhud and said: "I am with you." Sa'd said: "I was not able to do what he did." He said: So there were found on him over eighty sword strikes, spear stabs, and arrow shots.
