And the Emigrants (Muhajirun), they did not have enough spare time to wash it! The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has commanded dyeing gray hair, so whoever is not upon what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was upon, he is not (105) of the religion in anything. [This is supported by] the hadith of Abu Dharr, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, the hadith of Abu Rimthah, (106) and the hadith of Umm Salamah. (107)
It is recommended to dye hair with henna and katam; (108) because of what al-Khallal and Ibn Majah reported.

Regarding the hadith of Abu Rimthah, he said: "I set out with my father toward the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he had a tuft of hair that had the color of henna. Imam Ahmad also reported, in the Musnad 4/163, from him, that he said: "The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to dye with henna and katam." The hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) will come later. (108) Katam: A plant that has a reddish tint, mixed with wusmah (indigo), used for dyeing hair black.
