It is recommended that one rinses the mouth and inhales water from a single handful, combining both actions. Al-Athram said: I heard Abu Abd Allah being asked: Which do you prefer; rinsing the mouth and inhaling from a single scoop, or each of them separately? He said: With a single scoop. This is due to what we have mentioned regarding the hadith of Uthman and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both. In the hadith of Abdullah ibn Zayd (20), it is stated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) put his hands into [the vessel and rinsed his mouth] (21) and blew out the water three times, rinsing his mouth and blowing out from a single scoop. Reported by Sa‘id. In another wording: He rinsed his mouth and blew out the water three times, each three times, from a single scoop. Reported by al-Bukhari. In another wording: He rinsed his mouth and inhaled from a single handful, doing that three times. Agreed upon. In another wording, he rinsed his mouth, inhaled, and blew out three times with three scoops. Agreed upon. In another wording: He rinsed his mouth three times (22) and inhaled three times (22) from a single handful. Reported by al-Athram and Ibn Majah. If the one performing wudu wishes, he may rinse the mouth.

ويُسْتَحَبُّ أن يَتَمَضْمَضَ ويَسْتَنْشِقَ مِنْ كَفٍّ واحدةٍ يَجْمَعُ بينهما، قال الأَثْرَمُ: سَمِعْتُ أبا عَبْد اللَّه يُسْئَلُ: أَيُّمَا أَعْجَبُ إليكَ؛ المَضْمَضَةُ والاسْتِنْشَاقُ بِغَرْفَةٍ واحدةٍ، أو كُلُّ واحدةٍ مِنْها عَلَى حِدَةٍ؟ قال: بغَرْفَةٍ واحدةٍ. وذلك لما ذَكَرْنَا من حَدِيثِ عُثْمان وعَلِىٍّ، رَضِىَ اللهُ عنهما. وفي حَدِيثِ عبدِ اللهِ بنِ زَيْدٍ (٢٠)، أنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- أدْخَلَ يَدَيْه [التَّوْرَ فمَضْمَضَ] (٢١) واسْتَنْثَرَ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، يُمَضْمِضُ ويَسْتَنْثِرُ مِنْ غَرْفَةٍ واحدةٍ. رواهُ سَعِيدٌ. وفى لَفْظٍ: تَمَضْمَضَ واسْتَنْثرَ ثَلاثًا ثَلاثًا مِنْ غَرْفةٍ واحدةٍ. رَوَاهُ البُخَارِىُّ. وفى لَفْظٍ: فتَمَضْمَضَ واسْتَنْشَقَ من كَفٍّ واحدةٍ، فَعَلَ ذلك ثَلاثًا. مُتَّفَقٌ عليه. وفى لَفْظٍ، أنه مَضْمَضَ واسْتَنْشَقَ واسْتَنْثَرَ ثَلاثًا بِثَلَاثِ غَرَفاتٍ. مُتَّفَقٌ عليه. وفى لَفْظٍ: فمَضْمَضَ ثَلاثًا (٢٢) واسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلاثًا (٢٢) مِن كَفٍّ واحدةٍ. رواه الأَثْرَمُ، وابن مَاجَه. فإن شاء المُتَوَضِّىءُ تَمَضْمَضَ
