the hadith of al-'Ala' ibn Ziyad (18), that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ghusl and saw a spot that water had not reached, so he rubbed it with his hair. He said: "Yes, I adopt this." It was also narrated by Ibn Majah (19) from Ibn 'Abbas, from the Prophet (peace be upon him). It is also narrated from 'Ali that he said: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: I performed ghusl from Janaba and prayed, then I entered the morning (20) and saw an area the size of a fingernail that water had not reached. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Had you wiped over it with your hand, it would have sufficed you." It was also narrated by Ibn Majah (21). Muhanna said: Ahmad mentioned to me, regarding the Prophet (peace be upon him), that he saw on a man a spot that water had not reached, and he ordered him to squeeze his hair over it (22). It is narrated from Ahmad that he said: He takes new water; in it is a hadith that is not established concerning squeezing his hair. The hadith of Ibn 'Abbas was mentioned to him, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) squeezed his hair (limmah) over a spot that was on his body. He said: "That." But he did not authenticate it. The correct view is that it suffices him if it is from the wetness of the second or third washing, and his water flowed over that spot; because washing it with that wetness is like washing it with new water, along with what is in it of the ahadith. And Allah knows best.

60 - Issue: He said: (And he performs wudu with a mudd—which is one and a third ratls—and performs ghusl with a sa'—which is four mudds.)

There is no disagreement known to us regarding the validity of using a mudd for wudu and a sa' for ghusl. Safinah (1) narrated, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would use a sa' [of water] (2) for ghusl from Janaba, and a mudd for wudu. Narrated by Muslim (3). It is narrated that a group asked Jabir about ghusl, and he said: A sa' suffices you. A man said: It does not suffice me. Jabir said: It used to suffice someone who had more (4) hair than you, and who was better than you—meaning the Prophet (peace be upon him). Agreed upon (5). There are many authentic reports concerning this. The sa' is five and a third Iraqi ratls, and the mudd is one-fourth of that, which is one and a third ratls. This is the opinion of Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu 'Ubayd, and Abu Yusuf. Abu Hanifah said: The sa' is eight ratls, because Anas ibn Malik said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to perform wudu with a mudd—which is two ratls—and perform ghusl with a sa' (6). Our evidence is what was narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah: "Feed six poor persons a faraq of food." Agreed upon (7).
