The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded the washing of a vessel from the lapping of a dog and the discarding of its leftover water (su'r), and he did not distinguish between what changed and what did not change, even though the apparent circumstance is that it did not change. The report of Abu Umamah is weak, and the report of the well of Bida'ah and the other report are interpreted as referring to a large quantity of water, evidenced by the fact that whatever changed became impure, or we restrict both of them by the report of the two qullahs, as it is more specific than them, and the specific is given precedence over the general.

As for water exceeding two qullahs, if it has not changed and the impurity was not urine or feces, there is no disagreement in the Madhhab regarding its purity. This has been reported from Ibn 'Umar, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and Mujahid, and it is the view of Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu 'Ubaydah, and Abu Thawr (33). It is also the view of those we have narrated from, that a small amount does not become impure except through change.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: "If the water is two danubs (large buckets), it does not carry impurity." 'Ikrimah said: "A danub or two danubs."

Abu Hanifah and his companions held the view that a large quantity becomes impure through impurity, unless it reaches a limit where it is overwhelmingly likely that the impurity does not reach it. They differed regarding its limit; some of them said: it is when one side is moved, the other does not move. Others said: it is what reaches ten cubits by ten cubits (34), and what is less than that becomes impure, even if it reaches a thousand qullahs; because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do..."
