Allah be pleased with him; for it was narrated from him that he was giving a sermon one day when a man at the door of the mosque said: "There is no judgment but Allah's." Ali said: "A true word by which a falsehood is intended." He then said: "You have three things incumbent upon us: We shall not prevent you from the mosques of Allah wherein you mention the name of Allah the Almighty, we shall not withhold the fay' (spoils) from you as long as your hands are with us, and we shall not initiate battle against you." (28) Abu Yahya narrated, saying: Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, performed a prayer, and a man from the Kharijites called out to him: "If you associate others with Allah, your work will surely come to nothing, and you will be among the losers." (29) Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, replied to him: "So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, and let them not unsettle you who have no certainty." (30) Adi ibn Artah wrote to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz: "The Kharijites are insulting you." He wrote back to him: "If they insult me, then insult them, or pardon them. If they draw their weapons, then draw yours against them, and if they strike, then strike." This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not interfere with the hypocrites who were with him in Medina, so it is even more appropriate that others be treated likewise. It has been narrated in the account of the Kharijite whom he criticized, that Khalid said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not strike his neck?" He said: "No, (31) perhaps he prays." He said: "How many a person who prays has no good in him?" He said: "I have not been commanded to probe into the hearts of people." (32)
1533 - Issue; He said: (If what they used to defend themselves results in their own deaths, there is no liability on the defender, and if the defender is killed, he is a martyr.)
The summary of this is that when it is not possible to repel the rebels except by killing them, it is permissible to kill them, and there is no liability upon the one who...
