when they reach the stage of ajdha'? They replied: "The wool remains standing on its back as long as it is a lamb (hamal), but when the wool lies flat on its back, it is known that it has reached the jadh' stage." The thani of goats is when it completes one year and enters the second. A cow is such when it is two years old and enters the third, and a camel is such when [it has attained] five years and enters the sixth. Al-Asma'i, Abu Ziyad al-Kilabi, and Abu Zayd al-Ansari said: "When the fifth year has passed for the camel and it enters the sixth and loses its thaniyyah (incisor tooth), it is then a thani; and we believe it was only called thani because it shed its thaniyyah." As for the cow, it is that which is two years old; [because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not slaughter anything but a musinnah (mature animal)." And the musinnah of cows is that which is two years old] (5). Waki' said: The jadh' of sheep is that which is six or seven months old.
1753 - Issue: He said: (And in the sacrifices, one should avoid the one-eyed animal whose defect is evident, the emaciated animal that has no marrow, the lame animal whose lameness is evident, the sick animal whose recovery is not expected, and the 'adba' [ear-slit or horn-broken animal], and the 'adab is the removal of more than half of the ear or horn (1)).
As for the first four defects, we know of no disagreement among the people of knowledge that they prevent validity, due to what al-Bara' narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood among us and said: "Four are not permitted in sacrifices: the one-eyed animal whose defect is evident, the sick animal whose sickness is evident, the lame animal whose limping is evident (2), and the emaciated animal that has no marrow." Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i (3). The meaning of the one-eyed animal whose defect is evident is one whose eye has sunken and gone, because its eye is gone, and the eye is a desirable member. If there is a white film on its eye but it is not gone, it is permissible to sacrifice it, because its one-eyedness is not evident, and that does not diminish its meat.

إذا أَجْذَعَ؟ قالُوا (١): لا تزالُ الصُّوفَةُ قائِمَةً على ظَهْرِه ما دامَ حَمَلًا، فإذا نامَتْ الصُّوفَةُ على ظَهْرِه، عُلِمَ أنَّه قد أجْذَعَ. وثَنِىُّ المَعْزِ إذا تَمَّت له سَنَةٌ ودَخَلَ فى الثانِية، والبقرةُ إذا صارَ لها سنَتان ودَخَلَتْ فى الثالِثَةِ، والإِبلُ إذا [صار له] (٢) خمسُ سِنين ودخَل (٣) فى السادِسَة. قال الأَصْمَعِىُّ، وأبو زيادٍ الكلابِىُّ، وأبو زيد الأنصارِىُّ: إذا مَضَتِ السَّنَةُ الخامِسَةُ على البعيرِ، ودَخَلَ فى السادِسَةِ، وأَلْقَى ثَنِيَّتَهُ، فهو حينَئِذٍ ثَنِىٌّ، وَنرَى أنَّه (٤) إنَّما سُمِّىَ ثَنِيًّا لأنَّه أَلْقَى ثَنِيَّتَه. وأمَّا البقَرَةُ، فهى التى لها سَنَتان؛ [لأنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- قال: "لَا تَذْبَحُوا إلَّا مُسِنَّةً". ومُسِنَّةُ البَقَرِ التى لها سَنَتان] (٥). وقال وَكِيعٌ: الجذَعُ من الضَّأْنِ يكونُ ابنَ سَبْعَةِ أو سِتَّةِ أشْهُرٍ.
١٧٥٣ - مسألة؛ قال: (ويُجْتَنَبُ فِى الضَّحَايَا الْعَوْراءٌ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا، والْعَجْفَاءُ الَّتِى لَا تُنْقِى، والْعَرْجاءُ الْبيِّنُ عَرَجُهَا، والْمَرِيضةُ الَّتِى لا يُرْجَى بُرْؤُهَا، والْعَضبَاءُ، والعَضَبُ ذَهَابُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ نِصْفِ الأُذُنِ أو القَرْنِ (١))
أمُّا الْعُيوبُ الأَرْبَعَةُ الأُوَل، فَلَا نَعْلَمُ بينَ أهلِ العلمِ خِلافًا فى أَنَّها تَمْنَعُ الإِجْزاءَ؛ لما رَوَى الْبَرَاءُ قال: قامَ فِينَا رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، فقال: "أربَعٌ لَا تَجُوزُ فِى الأَضَاحِى؛ الْعَوْراءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا، والْمَرِيضَةُ البيِّنُ مَرَضُها، والْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلَعُها (٢) والعجفاءُ الَّتِى لَا تُنْقِى". روَاه أبو داوُدَ، والنَّسائِىُّ (٣). ومعنى العَوْراء البَيِّن عَوَرُها، التى قد انْخَسَفت عَيْنُها، وذَهَبَت؛ لأنَّها قد ذَهَبَت عينُها، والعَيْنُ عضوٌ مُسْتَطابٌ، فإن كان على عَيْنِها بَياضٌ ولم تذْهَبْ، جازَت التَّضْحِيَةُ بها؛ لأنَّ عَورَها ليس ببَيِّنٍ، ولا ينْقُصُ ذلك لَحْمَها.
