It is recommended that one should choose a good name, for it has been narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that he said: "You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and your fathers' names, so make your names good." (10) He (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) also said: "The most beloved names to Allah (11) are Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman." This is an authentic (sahih) hadith. (12) It was narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib that he said: The most beloved names to Allah the Almighty are the names of the Prophets. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Name yourselves with my name, but do not take my kunyah (agnomen)." (14) In one version: "Do not combine my name with my kunyah." (15)
Section: It is disliked to smear the child's head with blood. This was considered disliked by Ahmad, al-Zuhri, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and Ibn al-Mundhir. It was narrated from al-Hasan and Qatadah that it is recommended, due to what was narrated in the hadith of Samurah, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The boy is held in pledge by his aqiqah; it is slaughtered on his behalf on the seventh day, and he is smeared with blood (yudma)." (16) Recorded by Hammam, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Samurah. Ibn Abd al-Barr said: I do not know of anyone who said this except al-Hasan and Qatadah, and the rest of the scholars rejected it and considered it disliked because the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)

ويُستَحَبُّ أَنْ يُحْسِنَ اسمَه؛ لأَنَّه رُوِىَ عن النَّبِىِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، أنَّه قال: "إِنَّكُم تُدْعَوْنَ يومَ القيامَةِ بِأسْمَائِكُمْ، وأسْماءِ آبائِكُمْ، فَأَحْسِنُوا أسْمَاءَكُمْ" (١٠). وقال -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "أَحَبُّ الْأَسْماءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ (١١) عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، وعَبْدُ الرَّحْمنِ". حديثٌ صحيحٌ (١٢). ورُوِىَ عن سعيدِ بنِ المُسَيَّب، أنَّه قال: أحَبُّ الأَسماءِ إلى اللَّهِ تعالَى، أسْماءُ الأَنْبِياء. وقال النَّبِىُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "تَسَمَّوْا (١٣) بِاسْمِى، ولَا تَكَنَّوا بِكُنْيَتى" (١٤). وفى رِوايةِ: "لا تَجْمَعُوا بينَ اسْمِى وكُنْيَتِى" (١٥).
فصل: ويُكْرَه أَنْ يلطَّخَ رأسُه بِدَمٍ. كرِهَ ذلك أحمدُ، والزُّهْرِىُّ، ومالِكٌ، والشافِعِىُّ، وابنُ المُنْذِرِ. وحُكِىَ عن الحسنِ، وقَتادَةَ، أَنَّه مُسْتَحَبٌّ؛ لما رُوِىَ فى حديثِ سَمُرَةَ، عن النَّبِىِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- قال: "الْغُلَامُ مُرْتَهَنٌ بعَقِيقَتِه، تُذْبَحُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ السَّابعِ، ويُدْمَى" (١٦). روَاه هَمَّامٌ، عن قتادَةَ، عن الحسنِ، عن سَمُرَةَ. قال ابنُ عبدِ البَرِّ: لا أعلمُ أحدًا قال هذا إلّا الحسنَ وقتادَةَ، وأَنْكَرَه سائِرُ أهلِ العلمِ، وكَرِهُوه؛ لأنّ (١٧) النَّبِىَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-
