As for the amount to be given (1) to every needy person and its type, it has already been mentioned (2) in the chapter on Dhihar (3). Al-Khiraqi stipulated that flour and bread are sufficient. Ahmad also stipulated this. It was reported from him that bread is not sufficient, which is the view of Malik and al-Shafi'i. They said (4): Neither flour nor sawiq (roasted grain) is sufficient, because it has departed from the state of perfection and storability, and it is not sufficient in Zakah, so it is not sufficient in expiation, just like its value. Our argument is the saying of Allah the Almighty: {Therefore, its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that with which you feed your families} (5). This person has fed them from the average of what he feeds his family, so it must be sufficient. Imam Ahmad recorded in his book "Al-Tafsir," with his chain of transmission from Ibn 'Umar regarding the verse: {from the average of that with which you feed your families}. He said: Bread and milk. In a narration from him, he said: From the average of [what we feed our families]: bread and dates, bread and olive oil, and bread and ghee. Abu Razin (7) said: {from the average of that with which you feed your families}: bread, olive oil, and vinegar. Al-Aswad ibn Yazid said: Bread and dates. From 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: bread and dates, bread and ghee, bread and meat. From Ibn Sirin, he said: They used to say: The best of it is bread and meat, the average of it is bread and ghee, and the lowest of it is bread and dates. 'Ubaydah said: Bread and olive oil. A man asked Shurayh: What is the average food of my family? Shurayh replied: Indeed, bread, vinegar, and olive oil is good (8). The man said to him (9): Then what do you think of bread and meat?
