131 - Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq ibn Dīnār narrated to me, saying: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barāthī narrated to us, saying: Khalaf al-Burayrānī said to me: "A leper man was brought to me whose hands and feet were gone and who was blind. So I put him with the lepers and neglected him for days. Then I remembered him and said: 'O fellow, I have neglected you.' The leper said to me: 'I have One who does not neglect me.' I said: 'I was made to forget you.' He said: 'I have One who does not forget me.' I said: 'I did not mention you.' He said: 'I have One who mentions me; you have distracted me from the remembrance of God.' I said: 'Shall I not marry you to a woman who will clean you from these filthies?' He wept and then said to me: 'O Khalaf, would you marry me when I am the king of the world and its bride is with me?' I said: 'What do you have of the kingdom of the world when your hands and feet are gone, you are blind, and you eat as beasts eat?' He said: 'My contentment with God, Mighty and Majestic, in that He afflicted my limbs yet freed my tongue with His remembrance.' He said: 'So he fell into the highest esteem with me. He remained only a short while before he died. So I brought out a shroud for him that was long, and I cut off some of it. Then I was visited in my sleep, and it was said to me: "O Khalaf, were you stingy toward a saint with a long shroud? We have returned your shroud to you, and we have shrouded him in fine silk and brocade."' He said: 'So I rushed to the room of shrouds, and there was the shroud lying on the ground.'"
