85 - Ja'far al-Mukharrimi informed me, saying: Madhkur related to us, saying: 'Ali ibn 'Asim related to us, saying: Abu al-Mu'alla al-'Attar related to us, saying: I was walking with Sa'id ibn Jubayr when he caught sight of a woman who had veiled herself with a cloth bearing a cross, and he signaled to her with his eye. I said: "Glory be to Allah! You signal to her when she is not a mahram (unmarriageable kin) to you?" He replied: "Indeed, there are some matters of 'doing the good' that are not commanded except by the sword." Madhkur said: I mentioned this to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and he replied: "Sa'id ibn Jubayr was not pleased with her action."
