97 - And Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: I heard Abu Abd Allah (Ahmad ibn Hanbal) when Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal was mentioned in his presence, and he said: "He did not involve himself in any of the tribulations (fitan)." Another man was then mentioned, and he said: "May Allah have mercy on him; he died concealed (or: in safety/obscurity) before being tried with any of the bloodshed."
٩٧ - وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَذُكِرَ عِنْدَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ، فَقَالَ: لَمْ يَلْتَبِسْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ، وَذُكِرَ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ، فَقَالَ: رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ مَاتَ مَسْتُورًا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُبْتَلَى بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الدِّمَاءِ
