99 - And al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: Yahya al-Qattan informed us, saying: I heard Yahya ibn Adam saying: I heard Sufyan al-Thawri saying: "If I had been contemporary with Ali, I would not have gone out [to fight] with him." He [al-Marwudhi] said: So I mentioned this to al-Hasan ibn Salih, and he said: "Tell him, does he narrate this from you?" So Sufyan said: "Announce it on my behalf from the minaret."
٩٩ - وَأَخْبَرَنَا الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانُ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ آدَمَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيَّ، يَقُولُ: «لَوْ أَدْرَكْتُ عَلِيًّا مَا خَرَجْتُ ⦗١٣٩⦘ مَعَهُ» ، قَالَ: فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، فَقَالَ: قُلْ لَهُ يَحْكِي هَذَا عَنْكَ؟، فَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ: نَادِ بِهِ عَنِّي عَلَى الْمَنَارِ "
