164 - Muhammad ibn Musa al-Warraq informed me, saying: Ayyub ibn Ishaq ibn Safiri narrated to us that it was said to Abu Abd Allah: "Whoever is killed defending his wealth is a martyr." It was then said to him: "So does he fight for his wealth?" He replied: "He should not fight, for his soul—meaning the thief's—is forbidden to you. However, defend your wealth." It was said: "How do I defend it?" He said: "You should not intend to kill him or strike him, but defend yourself. If something happens to him at your hands, then it is a limit (hadd) that befell him, like one upon whom a legal penalty is carried out and he dies."
