294 - Abu Bakr narrated to us, saying: Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Bishr ibn Sharik said to me: 'A group of people came to me from your city, Baghdad, and they had a pamphlet with them. They said, "Tirmidhi sent this to you and said: Review it, and whatever you find objectionable in it, mark it so that he may return to your opinion." I looked into it, and the book contained a vilification of Mujahid and of everyone who maintains the hadith of Layth, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Praised Station" [Al-Isra: 79]. It stated: "He will seat him upon the Throne," and it contained vile speech that I found objectionable.' Abu Abd Allah said: 'Wait until I hand it to you.' Then he said: 'Come with us.' He entered his house and said: 'Enter.' I entered with him, and he handed the book to me. He then said to me: 'This is not from Mujahid alone; this is from Ibn Abbas, and Sharik has narrated it from Ata ibn al-Sa’ib, from Mujahid. I have compiled hadiths regarding this.' He said to me: 'I will write them down for you.' He wrote them in his own handwriting. Then he came to me at the archway of the porters (Taq al-Mahamil), visited me, and gave them to me. I said to him: 'Read it to me.' He said: 'Is it not sufficient for you that I wrote it for you in my own hand?' I said: 'No, I want you to read it to me.' So he read it to me.'
