1035 - Abu Bakr al-Marwudhi informed us, saying: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] say: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: {But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then they are your brothers in religion} [At-Tawbah: 11], and the Exalted also says: {And establish prayer and give zakah} [Al-Baqarah: 43]. He then said: This is part of faith. Then Abu 'Abd Allah said: "Faith is speech and action," and he said: "[There is] an increase in action," and he mentioned decrease [of faith] when one commits adultery or theft."
١٠٣٥ - وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْمَرُّوذِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: {فَإِنْ تَابُوا وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ فَإِخْوَانُكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ} [التوبة: ١١] وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ} [البقرة: ٤٣] وَقَالَ: هَذَا مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: " فَالْإِيمَانُ قَوْلٌ وَعَمَلٌ، وَقَالَ: الزِّيَادَةُ فِي الْعَمَلِ، وَذَكَرَ النُّقْصَانَ إِذَا زَنَى وَسَرَقَ "
