1672 - He said: Abu 'Abd Allah narrated to us, saying: Hajjaj narrated to us, saying: Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, saying: Sa'id narrated to me that he heard Abu Hurayrah saying: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent cavalry toward Najd. They returned with a man from Banu Hanifah called Thumamah ibn Uthal, the leader of the people of al-Yamamah. They tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out to him and said to him: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He replied: "I have good, O Muhammad. If you kill, you kill one who possesses blood (an enemy), and if you bestow grace, you bestow it upon one who is grateful. If you want wealth, ask and you shall be given whatever you wish of it." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) left him until the next day, and then asked him that three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Let Thumamah go." So they took him to some palm trees near the mosque, and he performed ghusl (a ritual bath), then entered the mosque and said: "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
١٦٧٢ - قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: ثنا حَجَّاجٌ، قَالَ: ثنا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدٌ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْلًا قِبَلَ نَجْدٍ، فَجَاءَتْ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ يُقَالَ لَهُ ثُمَامَةُ بْنُ أُثَالَةَ سَيِّدُ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةَ، فَرَبَطُوهُ بِسَارِيَةٍ مِنْ سَوَارِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: «مَاذَا عِنْدَكَ يَا ثُمَامَةُ؟» . فَقَالَ: عِنْدِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ خَيْرٌ، وَإِنْ تَقْتُلْ ذَا دَمٍ، وَإِنْ تُنْعِمْ تُنْعِمْ عَلَى شَاكِرٍ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْمَالَ فَسَلْ تُعْطَ مِنْهُ مَا شِئْتَ. فَتَرَكَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَانَ الْغَدُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «انْطَلِقُوا بِثُمَامَةَ» . وَانْطَلَقَ بِهِ إِلَى نَخْلٍ قَرِيبٍ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَاغْتَسَلَ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ، فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ "
