1767 - Zakariyya ibn al-Faraj informed me, on the authority of Ahmad ibn al-Qasim, that he said to Abu ‘Abd Allah al-Shafi‘i: "Did he speak to you?"—meaning, in the presence of al-Mu‘tasim. He replied: "May Allah disgrace him; I do not consider him to be upon Islam." He was mentioned in his presence in the most unsightly manner, and he [al-Shafi‘i] also described him in a similar way.
