A Beautiful Response

151 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Ḥanẓalī narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī narrated to us: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Azdī narrated to us, saying: I was walking around a wall in Beirut when I passed by a man dangling his legs into the sea while proclaiming the greatness of Allah (takbīr). So I leaned against the balcony beside him and said: "O young man! Why are you sitting alone?" He said: "Fear Allah and say nothing but the truth! I have never been alone since my mother gave birth to me; my Lord is with me wherever I am, two angels are with me recording my deeds, and a devil never leaves me. So whenever I have a need from my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, I ask Him for it in my heart and do not ask Him with my tongue, and He brings it to me." (1).
