12 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Sulaymān ibn ʿUmar ibn Khālid narrated to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Salama narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, from Umm Mubashshir al-Anṣāriyya, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh, Peace and blessings of God be upon him, say to his Companions: "Shall I not inform you of the best of people as a man?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allāh!" He gestured with his hand toward the East and said: "A man holding the reins of his horse in the cause of Allāh, waiting to attack or be attacked. Shall I not inform you of the best of them after him?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allāh!" He gestured with his hand toward the Ḥijāz and said: "A man tending a small flock of sheep, who establishes the Prayer, gives Zakat, knows the right of Allāh, Most High, in his wealth, and keeps away from the evils of the people." - (1) Its chain of transmission is weak (da'if), but the hadith is authentic (sahih):
Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim transmitted it in "al-Zuhd" under nos. (62, 82), and al-Ṭabarānī in his "al-Kabīr" (vol. 25, no. 271), from the route of Muḥammad ibn Salama, with it.
I say: And its chain of transmission is weak; in it is Ibn Isḥāq who commits obfuscation (tadlies) and narrated it with ʿanʿana, which is why al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (10/304): "Its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ibn Isḥāq commits obfuscation (tadlies)."
And his counterpart al-ʿIrāqī said in "Takhrīj Aḥādīth al-Iḥyāʾ" (2/226): "al-Ṭabarānī narrated it from Ibn Isḥāq via ʿanʿana."
I say: But he was followed in narration; he was followed by Sufyān, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, with it.
Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim transmitted it in "al-Zuhd" (35).
I say: Thus the hadith is authentic (sahih), and praise be to Allah alone.
