70 - ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Abū Khaythama narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us: Ḥabīb ibn Shihāb narrated to us: My father narrated to us, he said: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said on the day he delivered a sermon at Tabūk: "There is no one among the people like a man who holds the reins of his horse, engaging in Struggle (Jihad) in the cause of Allah, and avoiding the evils of the people; and like a man living in the desert with his sheep, hosting his guest and paying his due."

Extracted by Aḥmad (1/226), al-Ṭabarānī in Al-Kabīr (vol. 12, no. 12924), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in Al-Jihād (no. 154), and Abū Nuʿaym in Al-Ḥilya (8/386), via a path from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd with it.
And Yaḥyā was corroborated in it; Rūḥ ibn ʿUbāda corroborated him from Ḥabīb with it:
Extracted by Aḥmad (1/311), al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāma in his Musnad (617 – Bughyat al-Bāḥith, my editing), and al-Ḥākim in Al-Mustadrak (2/67).
Al-Ḥākim said: "This is a hadith with an authentic chain of transmission," though they did not extract it, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
I say: It is as they both said—may Allah have mercy on them.
And Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd was declared reliable by Ibn Maʿīn and al-Nasāʾī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said regarding him: "There is no harm in him." See: Al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl (1/q2/103), Al-Thiqāt by Ibn Ḥibbān (6/180), and Taʿjīl al-Manfaʿa by Ibn Ḥajar (p. 59).

مِنْ صِفَاتِ خَيْرِ النَّاسِ٧٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، ثنا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا حَبِيبُ بْنُ شِهَابٍ، ثنا أَبِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ، ﷺ، يَوْمَ خَطَبَ بِتَبُوكَ: " مَا فِي النَّاسِ مِثْلُ رَجُلٍ يَأْخُذُ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ يُجَاهِدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، وَيَجْتَنِبُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ، وَمِثْلُ رَجُلٍ بَادَ فِي غَنَمِهِ يَقْرِي ضَيْفَهُ وَيُعْطِي حَقَّهُ " (١) .
