80 - 'Abdullāh narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me, he said: Rawḥ ibn Salama al-Warrāq narrated to me, Qutham the Worshipper narrated to me, 'Abd al-Wāḥid ibn Zayd narrated to me, he said: I once descended into a valley, and suddenly I came upon a monk who had confined himself inside one of its caves. That alarmed me, so I said: "Are you a jinn or a human?" He wept and said: "And why fear anyone other than Allah?! A man whom his sins have destroyed, so he fled from them to his Lord; he is not a jinn, but a deluded human." I said: "How long have you been here?" He said: "For twenty-four years." I said: "Then who is your companion?" He said: "Solitude." I said: "So what is your food?" He said: "Fruits and the vegetation of the earth." I said: "Do you not yearn for people?" He said: "From them I fled." I said: "Are you upon Islam?" He said: "I know of nothing else." Abū 'Ubayd said: By Allah, I envied him for that place of his. (1)
