Al-'Umarī and Seclusion

84 - 'Abdullāh narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Marwazī narrated to me, he said: It reached me concerning him—meaning al-'Umarī—that he used to frequent the graveyard often, and he was never without a book with him that he would look into. So he was asked about that, and he said: "Indeed, nothing is a greater admonition than a grave, nothing is safer than solitude, and nothing is a better companion than a book." (1)

And al-Khaṭīb reported it in Taqyīd al-ʿIlm (p. 142), from another route, on the authority of al-ʿUmarī with it.
And al-ʿUmarī is: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, trustworthy, a devout worshipper, an ascetic, the scholar of the people of Medina; he died in the year 184 AH. He has a biographical entry in al-Tahdhīb (5/302, by Ibn Ḥajar).

الْعُمَرِيُّ وَالْعُزْلَةُ٨٤ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، قَالَ: بَلَغَنِي عَنْهُ، يَعْنِي: الْعُمَرِيَّ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَلْزَمُ الْجِبَانَ كَثِيرًا، وَكَانَ لا يَخْلُو مِنْ كِتَابٍ يَكُونُ مَعَهُ يَنْظُرُ فِيهِ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَوْعَظُ مِنْ قَبْرٍ، وَلا أَسْلَمُ مِنْ وَحْدَةٍ، وَلا آنَسُ مِنْ كِتَابٍ (١) .
