109- And ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Yūsuf al-Jubayrī narrated to me, from Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī, he said: I heard Sufyān al-Thawrī say: "If exegesis comes to you from Mujāhid, then it is sufficient for you."

110- And Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, he said: Sulaymān Abū Dāwūd narrated to us, from Shuʿba, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maysara, he said: al-Ḍaḥḥāk did not meet Ibn ʿAbbās; he only met Saʿīd ibn Jubayr in Rayy and took the exegesis from him.

111- Ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, he said: Abū Dāwūd narrated to us, from Shuʿba, from Mushāsh, he said: I said to al-Ḍaḥḥāk: "Did you hear anything from Ibn ʿAbbās?" He said: "No."

112- Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: Ibn Idrīs narrated to us, he said: Zakariyyā narrated to us, he said: al-Shaʿbī used to pass by Abū Ṣāliḥ Bādhān, grab his ear, twist it, and say: "You interpret the Qurʾān when you do not even read the Qurʾān!" (1)

113- ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Shabawayh narrated to me, he said: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, he said: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, he said: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr narrated to me, from Ibn ʿAbbās: ﴿{And Allāh judges with truth} [Sūrat Ghāfir: 20], he said: "He is able to reward good with good (2) and evil with evil. ﴿{Indeed, Allāh is the Hearing, the Seeing.} [Sūrat Ghāfir: 20]." Al-Ḥusayn said: So I said to al-Aʿmash: "Al-Kalbī narrated it to me, except that he said: 'Indeed, Allāh is able to reward evil with evil and good ten-fold.'" So al-Aʿmash said: "If what al-Kalbī has were with me, it would not leave my possession except under armed guard (3)."

  • (1) Report 112- Abū Ṣāliḥ Bādhān, also called "Bādhām": He is the freed slave of Umm Hāniʾ bint Abī Ṭālib, and he is a trustworthy Successor (Tabi'i). Whoever criticized him only did so because of his abundant speech regarding Tafsir, and regarding al-Kalbī's narration from him. See Sharḥ al-Musnad under hadith 2030. This report here was transmitted by Ibn Ḥajar in al-Tahdhīb in his biography 1: 417 from Zakariyyā, who is Ibn Abī Zāʾida. Rubbing the hide and the ear means taking them between one's hands or fingers and rubbing them vigorously.
  • (2) In the manuscript: "capable of not being rewarded", which is an error.
  • (3) Report 113- This report will come in the Tafsir of Sūrat Ghāfir: 20. Its wording there is: "Nothing departed from me except with a protector," whereas what was here in the printed edition was "Nothing departed from me with a protector," and the correct reading is what we have established. The "protector" (khafīr) is the protector of a people who remain under his guarantee as long as they are in his land. As for the narrator of this report—ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid—Abū Ḥātim graded him as Da'if (Weak), and al-Bukhārī said: "I used to pass by him at both ends of the day, but I did not write down from him." His father, Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid, is trustworthy.
