be upon you both," that he intended: "Then peace be upon you both," and his claim that inserting "name" in that and annexing it to "peace" was only permissible because the name of the named thing is the named thing itself.

And those who hold the view of the one whose opinion we cited are asked, so it is said to them: "Do you deem permissible in Arabic for one to say: 'I ate the name of honey,' meaning thereby: 'I ate honey,' just as it was permissible according to you to say: 'The name of Peace be upon you,' while intending: 'Peace be upon you'?"

If they say: "Yes!" they depart from the language of the Arabs and permit in its language what all Arabs consider erroneous in their language. And if they say: "No!" they are asked for the distinction between the two: and they will not say regarding one of them a statement without being bound in the other by its equivalent.

If an objector says to us: "What then is the meaning of this statement of Labīd according to you?"

It is said to him: That carries two possible aspects, both of which are other than what was said by the one whose opinion we cited.

One of them: That "al-Salām" (Peace) is one of the Names of God, so it is permissible that Labīd meant by his statement: "Then the name of Peace be upon you both": "Then adhere to the Name of God and His Remembrance after that, and leave remembering me and weeping over me," by way of incitement (ighrāʾ). Thus he nominative-marked "the name" (ism), since he postponed the particle that functions as incitement. (1) And the Arabs may do that when they postpone the incitement particle and bring forward the object of incitement, even though they might make it accusative while it is postponed. Of that is the poet's saying:

O water-drawer, my bucket is yours! ... For indeed I have seen people praising you! (2)

For he incited using "is yours" (dūnak), while it was postponed, and its meaning is only: "Take my bucket." So that is like Labīd's saying:

Until the passing of a year, then the name of Peace be upon you both

meaning: "Upon you both be the name of Peace," that is: "Adhere to the Remembrance of God, and leave remembering me and grieving over me, because whoever weeps for a year over a deceased person has fulfilled his duty." So this is one of its two aspects.

  • (1) In the printed edition: "idhā wa-akhkhara". And his statement "so he nominative-marked the noun" (fa-rafaʿa al-isma) refers to what is in Labīd's verse "thumma ismu", whereas it was its right to be in the accusative case as an incitement (ighrā') had he said: "thumma ʿalaykumā isma al-salām", putting the incitement first.
  • (2) This is a rajaz verse in a long report, al-Khizāna 3: 17, recited in mockery of a man whom they threw into a well and then chanted rajaz over him. And al-mā'iḥ is the man who descends to the bottom of the well when its water becomes scarce, filling the buckets with his hand and drawing water for his companions.
