143 - Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Ibn ʿUyayna narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥasan, from Ibn ʿAbbās: {and leave you and your worship}, saying: Pharaoh was only worshipped and did not worship. (1)

And likewise ʿAbd Allāh used to recite it, as well as Mujāhid.

144 - Al-Qāsim narrated to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Ḥajjāj informed me, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujāhid: His statement: "and leave you and your worship", he said: and your worship. (2) And there is no doubt that al-ilāha—according to how Ibn ʿAbbās and Mujāhid interpreted it—is a verbal noun from the saying of a speaker: "So-and-so worshipped Allah with devotion", just as it is said: "So-and-so worshipped Allah with worship", and "He interpreted the dream with interpretation". Thus, this statement of Ibn ʿAbbās and Mujāhid has clarified that "alaha" means "worshipped", and that "al-ilāha" is its verbal noun.

If he says: Then if it is permissible to say of one who worshipped Allah: "alahahu"—according to the interpretation of the statement of Ibn ʿAbbās and Mujāhid—then what is obligated regarding that to be said when the reporter intends to report Allah's entitlement to that from His servant?

  • (1) Reports 142 and 143—Their chains of transmission are weak (da'if), on account of Sufyān ibn Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, the teacher of al-Ṭabarī in both of them. This Sufyān is weak (da'if); his father was an authoritative leader (imām), whereas he was a righteous man, but his copyist corrupted his hadiths for him and inserted into them what was not from his narration. The scholars advised him to leave him, but he did not do so, and for that reason they abandoned him. Ibn Ḥibbān said in Kitāb al-Majrūḥīn, no. 470, pp. 238–239: "So because of his persistence in what was pointed out to him, he deserved to be abandoned." And these two reports will be mentioned by al-Ṭabarī in the Tafsīr of the verse of Sūrat al-Aʿrāf: 127 (9/18 Būlāq), and there is some corruption in one of them. Al-Suyūṭī transmitted their meaning in al-Durr al-Manthūr (3/107). The correct, well-known recitation is: {and leave you and your gods}. As for this recitation "and your worship", the author of Itḥāf Bashar (p. 229) transmitted it from Ibn Muḥayṣin and al-Ḥasan. Ibn Khālawayh transmitted it in Kitāb al-Qirāʾāt al-Shādhdha (p. 45) from ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, and Ibn ʿAbbās. And Abū Ḥayyān mentioned it in al-Baḥr (4/367) from these three, "and Anas and a group of others."
  • (2) Report 144—Al-Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd: His name is "al-Ḥusayn" and his nickname is "Sunayd", with a ḍamma on the undotted sīn and a fatḥa on the nūn. He was famous by this nickname, and his biography is given under it in al-Tahdhīb (4/244–245) and in al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl (3/1/326). And Ḥajjāj: He is Ibn Muḥammad al-Maṣṣīṣī, one of the teachers of Imam Aḥmad. This report from Mujāhid will be narrated by al-Ṭabarī in the Tafsīr of the verse of al-Aʿrāf (9/18 Būlāq)—via another chain of transmission.
