regarding the meaning of His command to His servants, the indication of what was made explicit in the statement rendered unnecessary the expression of what was omitted.

We have narrated the report that we previously mentioned at the beginning of the interpretation of the statement of God: (1) {All praise is due to God, Lord of the worlds}, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, that he used to say: "Gabriel said to Muḥammad: Say, O Muḥammad, 'All praise is due to God, Lord of the worlds.'" And we explained that Gabriel only taught Muḥammad what he was commanded to teach him (2). This report informs of the correctness of what we said regarding the interpretation of that.

Discourse on the interpretation of His statement: {Lord}.

Abū Jaʿfar said: The explanation regarding the interpretation of the name of God, which is "God," has already passed in "In the name of God," so there is no need for us to repeat it in this place.

As for the interpretation of His statement {Lord}, the word "Lord" (al-Rabb) in the speech of the Arabs applies to several meanings: The obeyed master among them is called a lord (rabb). Of that is the statement of Labīd ibn Rabīʿa:

And they destroyed one day the lord of Kinda and his son, And the lord of Maʿadd, between Khabt and ʿArʿar. (3)

He means by "the lord of Kinda": the master of Kinda. And of it is the statement of al-Nābigha of Banū Dhubyān:

Trotting to al-Nuʿmān until it reaches him, May my newly acquired property and my ancient wealth be a ransom for you from a lord! (4)

And the man who sets a thing right is called a lord (rabb). Of that is the statement of al-Farazdaq ibn Ghālib:

  • (3) His Diwan, poem: 15 / 32. The master of Kinda is Hujr, the father of Imru' al-Qays. And the lord of Ma'add: Hudhayfa ibn Badr, as the commentator of his Diwan says, though I am in doubt about it, for Hudhayfa ibn Badr was killed at al-Haba'a. Labid mentions Khabt and 'Ar'ar, which are two places other than it.
  • (4) His Diwan: 89, and al-Mukhassas 7:154. Al-tarif and al-tarif: newly acquired wealth, the opposite of al-talid and al-talad: which is ancient wealth born in one's possession.
