19- Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Yūnus informed me — and Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: Rishdīn ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid — both from Ibn Shihāb, he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtba narrated to me that Ibn ʿAbbās narrated to him: That the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Gabriel taught me to recite according to one mode, so I petitioned him, and I kept asking him for more and he gave me more, until it reached seven modes." Ibn Shihāb said: It has reached me that those seven modes are only regarding a matter that is one, not differing in lawful or prohibited. (1)

  • (1) Hadith 19—It is transmitted through two chains of transmission: one is authentic and the other is weak:
The first chain of transmission: From Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, from Ibn Wahb, from Yūnus—who is Ibn Yazīd al-Aylī—from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī. It is a very authentic chain of transmission.
And the second: From Abū Kurayb, from Rishdīn—who is Ibn Saʿd—from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid, from al-Zuhrī. It is a weak chain of transmission due to the weakness of Rishdīn ibn Saʿd; he was a righteous man in whom there was heedlessness, and his mistakes were numerous, so disapproved reports (manākīr) predominated in his narrations. However, in this hadith, he was not alone in narrating it from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid, as will come.
And "Rishdīn": with a kasra on the unpointed rāʾ and dāl, with an unpointed, quiescent shīn between them. And "ʿUqayl": with a ḍamma on the unpointed ʿayn.
The hadith was narrated by Muslim (1/225) from Ḥarmala, from Ibn Wahb, from Yūnus, similar to the first chain of transmission here. It was also narrated by al-Bukhārī (6/222, Fatḥ al-Bārī) via Sulaymān ibn Bilāl from Yūnus as well.
And al-Bukhārī narrated it (9/20–21) from Saʿīd ibn ʿUfayr, from al-Layth ibn Saʿd, from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid, from al-Zuhrī.
And it will also come with an authentic chain of transmission under no. 22, from the narration of Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid from al-Zuhrī.
These two chains of transmission support the second chain of transmission here—I mean the narration of Rishdīn ibn Saʿd from ʿUqayl. For this reason, I say that Rishdīn—despite his weakness—was not alone in his narration from ʿUqayl.
And the statement of Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī: "It has reached me that those seven modes..." etc.: al-Bukhārī did not mention it, while Muslim mentioned it in his narration. It is mursal and not connected, so it is weak in chain of transmission. For this reason, al-Bukhārī refrained from mentioning it.
Furthermore, the hadith was also narrated by Aḥmad, similarly, in al-Musnad (no. 2860) from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī. Muslim narrated it (1/225) from ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, but he did not recite its text; rather, he referred it to the narration of Yūnus from al-Zuhrī.
Aḥmad also narrated it in brief (nos. 2375, 2717) from the narration of the nephew of al-Zuhrī from his uncle.
And Ibn Kathīr cited it in Faḍāʾil al-Qurʾān (53) from one of the two narrations of al-Bukhārī, then indicated his other narration, the two narrations of Muslim, and this narration of al-Ṭabarī.
