ترجمة آلية35- Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, he said: Shuʿba narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb: That the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, was at the pool of Banū Ghifār. He said: So Gabriel came to him and said: "Allah commands you to have your nation recite the Qur'an according to one mode." He said: "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness, for my nation cannot bear that." He said: Then he came to him a second time and said: "Allah commands you to have your nation recite the Qur'an according to two modes." He said: "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness, for my nation cannot bear that." Then he came to him a third time and said: "Allah commands you to have your nation recite the Qur'an according to three modes." He said: "I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness, for my nation cannot bear that." Then he came to him a fourth time and said: "Allah commands you to have your nation recite the Qur'an according to seven modes; whichever mode they recite according to, they have done right." (1)
36- Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, he said: Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Shuʿba, from al-Ḥakam, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, he said: Gabriel came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, at the pool of Banū Ghifār—and he mentioned similar to it. (2)

Muslim narrated it 1:225–226, from Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā and others, from Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar. Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī narrated it in al-Sunan, number 1478 / 2:102, from Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā as well.
Ibn Kathīr transmitted it in al-Faḍāʾil 58–59 from this location in the Tafsīr of al-Ṭabarī. He said: "Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī extracted it from the narration of Shuʿba, with it." - (2) Hadith 36: It is a repetition of the hadith before it.
