39- Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā al-Ṣanʿānī narrated to us, he said: Al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, he said: I heard ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Sayyār Abū al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, attributing it to the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him): He mentioned that two men disputed over a verse of the Qurʾān, each claiming that the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) had recited it to him. So they recited before Ubayy, but Ubayy differed with them both, so they recited before the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him). He said: "O Prophet of God, we differed over a verse of the Qurʾān, and each of us claims that you recited it to him." So he said to one of them: "Recite." He said: So he recited, and he said: "You are correct." And he said to the other: "Recite." So he recited differently from his companion, and he said: "You are correct." And he said to Ubayy: "Recite." So he recited, differing with both of them, and he said: "You are correct." Ubayy said: "So such doubt entered my mind regarding the matter of the Messenger of God (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) as had entered me during the pre-Islamic Days of Ignorance." He said: "The Messenger of God (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) recognized what was on my face, so he raised his hand and struck my chest, and said: 'Seek refuge with God from the accursed Devil.'" He said: "So I burst into sweat, as if I were looking at God in awe. And he said: 'A visitor came to me from my Lord and said: Indeed, your Lord commands you to recite the Qurʾān according to one mode.' So I said: 'My Lord, lighten [it] for my nation.' He said: 'Then he came and said: Indeed, your Lord commands you to recite the Qurʾān according to one mode.' So I said: 'My Lord, lighten [it] for my nation.' He said: 'Then he came a third time and said: Indeed, your Lord commands you to recite the Qurʾān according to one mode.' So I said: 'My Lord, lighten [it] for my nation.' He said: 'Then he came to me a fourth time and said: Indeed, your Lord commands you to recite the Qurʾān according to seven modes, and for every response you receive a request.' He said: 'I said: My Lord, forgive my nation! My Lord, forgive my nation! And I saved the third [request] as intercession
