Mention of the reports that were narrated encouraging the knowledge of the Tafsir of the Qur'an, and those among the Companions who used to explain it:

81 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shaqīq al-Marwazī narrated to us, he said: I heard my father say: Al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid narrated to us, he said: Al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Shaqīq, from Ibn Masʿūd, he said: Whenever a man among us learned ten verses, he would not move past them until he knew their meanings and how to act upon them. (1)

82 - Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Jarīr narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, he said: Those who used to recite to us narrated to us that they used to learn recitation from the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him; when they learned ten verses, they would not leave them until they acted upon what was in them, so we learned the Qur'an and action together. (2)

83 - And Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: Jābir ibn Nūḥ narrated to us, he said: Al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Muslim, from Masrūq, he said: ʿAbd Allāh said: By Him besides Whom there is no god, no verse was revealed in the Book of God except that I know concerning what it was revealed and where it was revealed; and if I knew of anyone more knowledgeable about the Book of God than me whom camels could reach, I would surely go to him. • (1) Hadith 81 - This chain of transmission is Sahih (Authentic). It is Mawquf upon Ibn Masʿūd, but it is Marfu' in meaning, because Ibn Masʿūd only learned the Qurʾān from the Messenger of Allah, Peace and blessings of God be upon him. Thus, he is describing what existed in that illuminated prophetic era.
  • (2) Hadith 82 - This chain of transmission is Sahih (Authentic) and continuous. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is al-Sulamī, and his name is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥabīb, and he is among the senior Successors. He explicitly stated that those who taught him to recite narrated to him, and that they "used to learn recitation directly from the Prophet, Peace and blessings of God be upon him," so they are the Companions. The ambiguity of the Companion does no harm; rather, his hadith remains continuously transmitted with a connected chain.
  • (3) Hadith 83 - Recorded by al-Bukhārī; see Fatḥ al-Bārī 9: 45–46, and its wording is "camels could reach it, I would have ridden to it."
