The Tafsir of al-Kalbi: The town was Ayla. It has been mentioned to us that they were present during the time of David (peace be upon him). It is a place by the sea where fish gather during one month of the year, like a festival; they come to them from it to such an extent that they cannot see the water. They also come to them in other months every Sabbath day, just as they come to them during that [special] month. When the Sabbath would come, they would not touch anything of them. However, some foolish men from that city deliberately caught the fish on the night of the Sabbath and on the day of the Sabbath; they took many of them, salted them, and sold them. No punishment befell them, so they rejoiced and said: "We see that the Sabbath has been permitted, and its sanctity has departed; it was only our forefathers who were punished for it." They continued to do this for years until they grew wealthy from it, married women, and acquired assets. Groups of the righteous among them approached them and said: "O people, you have violated the sanctity of your Sabbath, disobeyed your Lord, and contravened the Sunnah of your Prophet. Desist from this action before the punishment descends upon you." They replied: "Why do you preach to a people whom you know God is about to destroy? If you were to taste [what we have tasted], you would do exactly as we have done. We have been doing this for years, and God has increased us in nothing but good." The righteous ones said: "Woe to you, do not be deceived, and do not feel secure from the might of God."
