[And they obstruct from al-Masjid al-Haram, and they were not its guardians]. The Arab polytheists claimed that they were the guardians of al-Masjid al-Haram, so Allah said: [And they were not its guardians; its guardians are none but the righteous].
﴿وَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَمَا كَانُوا أولياءه﴾ زَعَمَ مُشْرِكُو الْعَرَبِ أَنَّهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ، فَقَالَ اللَّهُ: ﴿وَمَا كَانُوا أَوْلِيَاءَهُ إِنْ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ إِلا الْمُتَّقُونَ﴾
