"O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion," and al-ghuluww (excessiveness) is exceeding the truth.
"And do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before," meaning: the Jews.
"And misled many," meaning: those who followed them, "and have strayed from the straight path," meaning: from the intent of the path of guidance.
﴿يَا أهل الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ﴾ وَالْغُلُوُّ: مُجَاوَزَةُ الْحَقِّ.
﴿وَلا تَتَّبِعُوا أَهْوَاءَ قَوْمٍ قَدْ ضَلُّوا مِنْ قبل﴾ يَعْنِي: الْيَهُود.
﴿وأضلوا كثيرا﴾ يَعْنِي: مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُمْ ﴿وَضَلُّوا عَنْ سَوَاء السَّبِيل﴾ يَعْنِي: عَنْ قَصْدِ طَرِيقِ الْهُدَى.
